Our interdisciplinary team draws on strengths from the Departments of Visualization, Statistics, Computer Science, and Mechanical Engineering. We have also diversified in terms of rank and position. Our goal is to be inclusive, and welcome collaboration to complement the core team, from across the Texas A&M System, and beyond.

Pilot Project 1

Data Materialization, Climate Change

Scientists often struggle to share the impact of their work with the greater community. Visualization is arguably a prime delivery mechanism to deliver scientific results to a broader audience. Emerging work demonstrates the power of leveraging collaboration between scientists and artists to innovate compelling new methods of data presentation, that transcend not only disciplinary boundaries but also engage the viewer beyond sight. Key to these successful recent innovations is intellectual diversity.

Pilot Project 2

Climate Change, Risk Mitigation, Flood Awareness

Psychological Distancing is the tendency to downplay environmental risks to nearby or familiar people or places, and shift that risk to focus on future generations or distant communities. One of the primary obstacles to climate change engagement is psychological distancing. Researchers have suggested that framing climate change in terms of local impact reduces psychological distance.

Themes

Common themes, methods, opportunities for cross ­benefits and growth emerged from the early discussions, talks and round­tables. In no particular order we have identified seven themes with opportunity for cross­ benefits and growth based on the participants’ interests.

  • Intellectual Diversity Truly collaborative/interdisciplinary endeavors ­having artists, scientists, engineers, stakeholders all invested from day one.
  • Risk perception/Dangerous Simulation and Training/Reduce Cognitive load or workload.
  • Climate Change, Conservation, Protection and Sustainability.
  • Emotional Impact, connecting people to the salient issues through data presentation.
  • Useful Interpretation and presentation of Public Data Sets and Open source Data.
  • Invisible/Hard­ to­ see data. How do we best present it, and why we need to present it.
  • The notion of a display as a channel for communication. This does not have to be (only) visible. Other senses can be engaged. Focus on human ­centered design, and balancing cognitive load.
